What the Gene Keys are
The Gene Keys are a contemplative system built on the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching — the same 64 archetypes that Human Design maps as gates. Each Gene Key describes a spectrum of one human theme across three levels: a lower expression, a higher one, and a transcendent one. The invitation isn't to be labeled, but to contemplate how a theme moves through your life over time.
Your Hologenetic Profile is the personal map: your birth chart placements sorted into a set of spheres, each carrying one of the 64 Gene Keys. It's a rich framework — and rather than thinly generate every sphere, AstroWise focuses on the part most people start with and return to: the Activation Sequence.

Gene Keys and Human Design
The two systems are siblings. Both are built on the same 64 gates of the I Ching, calculated from the same points in your chart. The difference is the lens: Human Design reads those gates as a mechanical bodygraph — your type, your centers, your decision-making authority — while the Gene Keys read the very same gates as a slow, contemplative path from shadow to gift.
Because AstroWise calculates the gates once, it can offer both views without contradiction, and treat their agreement as one more signal.
What it needs, and what it can't do
Your Activation Sequence is calculated from your birth date, time, and place. Birth time sharpens the exact line of each Gene Key; without it, AstroWise still produces your four gates, but the line-level detail is treated as approximate.
And the honest limit: the Gene Keys are a lens for reflection, not a set of fixed facts about you. They describe potentials and tendencies to contemplate — not a diagnosis, and not a prediction. That's exactly why AstroWise never leans on this one system alone.

The Hologenetic Profile is the full Gene Keys map of a person — a set of spheres drawn from your birth chart, each holding one of the 64 Gene Keys. AstroWise focuses on the core of that profile, the Activation Sequence, rather than generating every sphere of the complete profile.
What does AstroWise calculate for Gene Keys?+
Your Activation Sequence — the four prime gifts: Life's Work, Evolution, Radiance, and Purpose. These come from the Sun and Earth positions in your birth chart and its Design moment, mapped onto the 64 Gene Keys. AstroWise does not generate the full Venus or Pearl sequences.
How are Gene Keys related to Human Design?+
They share the same foundation — the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, mapped as 64 gates. Human Design reads them as a bodygraph of type, centers, and authority; Gene Keys read the same gates as a contemplative path from shadow to gift. AstroWise calculates both and treats them as related but distinct.
Do I need my birth time for Gene Keys?+
Birth time makes the reading more precise, because it fixes the exact line of each Gene Key. Without a birth time, AstroWise still produces your Activation Sequence gates, but the finer line-level detail is approximate.
