Unlike Western astrology, the Maya didn't map planets against the zodiac. Their sacred calendar, the Tzolk'in, runs on a 260-day cycle: 20 named Day Signs turning against 13 numbered Tones. Every day is a unique pairing of a sign and a tone — 260 combinations in all, each called a kin. Your birth date falls on one of them, and that's your Mayan "sign."
It's an entirely different lens from a natal chart. Where Western astrology reads position in the sky, the Tzolk'in reads position in a sacred rhythm of days — which is exactly why AstroWise includes it as one of nine systems, rather than leaning on any single tradition.
Which Mayan count we use — and why it matters
This is where a lot of "Mayan sign" calculators quietly disagree with each other. There are two counts in common use, and they are not the same system:
- ✓ The traditional Tzolk'in count (aligned with the widely used GMT correlation) counts every single calendar day in an unbroken chain — leap days included. This is the count AstroWise uses.
- ≠ The Dreamspell count (a modern 1980s system) deliberately skips February 29 each leap year, so over time it drifts away from the traditional count and can land you on a different Day Sign.
Both are internally consistent; they're just different traditions. Our calculator and your AstroWise report both use the traditional count, so the free result here will always match your paid report. If another site gave you a different sign, a Dreamspell count is the usual reason.
Reading your Day Sign and Tone
The Day Sign — what
One of 20 archetypes — from Imix, the nurturing source, to Ahau, the enlightened sun. Your Day Sign describes the essential character or energy you're said to carry, a little like a core temperament.
The Galactic Tone — how
A number from 1 to 13 describing how that energy expresses. Low tones initiate and build (1 Magnetic, 4 Self-Existing); middle tones empower and refine; high tones release and complete (13 Cosmic). It's the rhythm your sign moves to.
Together they make your kin: for example, 8 Muluc reads as the flowing, purifying energy of the Red Moon expressed through the harmonizing 8th tone. The calculator above gives you both.
A worked example
Take December 21, 2012 — the date that ended a great cycle of the Maya Long Count. In the traditional Tzolk'in, that day is kin 160: 4 Ahau — the Yellow Sun (enlightenment, universal fire) carried by the 4th, Self-Existing tone (form and definition). Fittingly for a threshold date, it lands on Ahau, the sign of completion and light.
Your own date resolves the same way: it's converted to a continuous day-count, wrapped onto the 260-day cycle to find your kin, and split into a Day Sign (1 of 20) and a Tone (1 of 13). No birth time or place required — just the date.
